Wagner On Memorial Day 2001, I was at Gilbert Cemetery and there were two American Flags and one Rebel flag places amongst the weeds and broken tombstones to honor our veterans. INFO: GAR stands for Grand Army of the Republic, which was a organization for soldiers that fought in the Civil War. Interesting story from the Centennial Book: 1876, Family history has it that John Safranek (sometimes Shafranek) was with General Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn. According to family legend, John heard the Indians would kill anything moving during a fight, so when things got really rough he covered himself with blood and snuggled up to a dead soldier where he became still as death himself. Then after dark, he slipped away from the battleground and deserted. After this incident John returned to Czechoslovakia for awhile. When he came to America again, his brothers, Frank, Paul and Mary came with him. John Safranek lived south of Pleasant Hill. When he became an old man, his family attempted to get him into the Old Soldiers Home in Grand Island, but his army records were searched and Safranek was told he had died at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. It took an Act of Congress according to family to determine that Safranek "had been on a scouting expedition in the Black Hills at the time of the Battle" before he could get into the home. It was at this home in Grand Island that Safranek died. |
